There’s something special about fall in Saratoga Springs—crisp mornings, colorful leaves, cooler temperatures and plenty of beautiful places to explore with your four-legged best friend.

Whether your dog prefers an easy stroll with plenty of time to sniff or is ready to hit the trails for a longer adventure, fall is one of the best times of year to get outside together.

Grab the leash, pack some water and treats, and check out a few of our favorite places for a fall walk in and around Saratoga Springs.

Saratoga Spa State Park

You don’t have to travel far from downtown Saratoga Springs to find a beautiful fall walk.

Saratoga Spa State Park offers a mix of paved paths, wooded trails, open spaces and streamside areas, making it easy to choose a walk that works for you and your dog. The park’s historic architecture surrounded by fall foliage also makes for a pretty spectacular backdrop for those obligatory dog photos!

The relatively gentle terrain makes this a great option if you’re looking for a relaxing walk rather than a challenging hike.

Dogs are permitted in many areas of the park but must be supervised and either crated or kept on a leash no longer than six feet. There are some areas where pets aren’t permitted, so be sure to follow posted signs.

Why we love it in the fall: It’s close to downtown, offers lots of different walking options and gives you plenty of opportunities to enjoy Saratoga’s fall colors.

Bog Meadow Brook Nature Trail

Just minutes from downtown, Bog Meadow Brook Nature Trail feels like a little escape from the city.

The two-mile trail follows an abandoned railroad and passes through the 174-acre Meadowbrook Preserve, which includes wetlands and woods. It’s a particularly nice choice for dogs and their humans who enjoy a quieter, nature-focused walk.

Because the trail isn’t especially long, you can make this a quick morning outing or take your time and let your pup investigate every interesting fall smell along the way.

Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed and under control, and owners are required to clean up after them.

Why we love it in the fall: Wooded scenery, wetlands and changing leaves make this peaceful trail feel completely different as the seasons change.

Saratoga National Historical Park

Want to combine your fall walk with a little local history?

Head to Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater, where dogs are welcome on the park’s trails as long as they remain on a leash no longer than six feet.

One option for more adventurous pups is the Wilkinson Trail. The 4.2-mile trail travels through open fields and wooded areas on a combination of mowed grass and forest floor. There’s also a shortcut that can reduce the walk to just under two miles.

Bring water for both you and your dog—the National Park Service specifically advises against allowing pets to drink from streams in the park.

Why we love it in the fall: Wide-open views, wooded stretches, history and plenty of room to explore make this a great choice when you want more than a quick neighborhood walk.

Victory Woods

If you want to explore Saratoga National Historical Park but your pup isn’t up for a four-mile hike, Victory Woods in Schuylerville is another option.

The self-guided trail includes a raised, accessible half-mile pathway through the woods. If you begin at the Saratoga Monument, the walk through Victory Woods is approximately one mile. Leashed pets are welcome, and visitors are required to clean up after them.

This can be a nice choice for older dogs, smaller dogs or anyone looking for a shorter fall adventure.

Why we love it in the fall: It’s a manageable walk through the woods with plenty of history along the way.

Moreau Lake State Park

If you and your dog are ready to venture a little farther outside Saratoga Springs, Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort is well worth the drive.

Surrounded by hardwood forests, pine stands and rocky ridges, the park offers multi-use trails and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

With all those hardwood trees, fall is an especially beautiful time to visit.

The park allows a maximum of two pets in campsites and day-use areas unless otherwise posted. Pets must be supervised and either crated or kept on a leash no longer than six feet. Some areas—including buildings, playgrounds, boardwalks and guarded beaches—are off limits to pets.

Why we love it in the fall: If you want to turn your dog walk into a bigger outdoor adventure, the combination of lake views, woods and trails is hard to beat.

Don’t Forget Your Fall Walking Essentials

Before you head out, throw a few basics in your bag:

  • Water and a portable bowl
  • Waste bags
  • Treats
  • A leash
  • A towel for muddy paws
  • Tick remover or tick-checking tool
  • An extra layer if temperatures are expected to drop

Fall is still tick season, so check your dog carefully after walking through tall grass, leaves or wooded areas. Pay particular attention around the ears, neck, legs, toes and under the collar.

And remember: even if your dog is friendly, keeping them leashed where required protects your pup, other dogs, wildlife and fellow trail users.
